Episode 129: ReFocused, Ready, and What Did They Say?

Join the Crew host Corey Moss, Tim Van Woeart and Maura Quinn as they welcome their guests:

John Greene – Vice President of Sales and Marketing at New Era Technology
Adrian Doughty – Director, North American Sales at Nureva
Michelle Loret – Senior Account Executive at Utelogy
Kaleo Lee – Sales Manager – Southwest at BrightSign

And so it begins – the Crew and the guests, who are all in different time zones in the U.S. and Canada, start the leadoff banter. Michelle interviews Kaleo, John points out the advantages to working for a Frank, and Corey talks about one of the guests being the happiest person in the industry. Then the latest Tweetstorm (John wants in) – and it all unfolds from there.

Topic 1: InFocus ReFocused?

The Crew and guests take a deep dive into this story:

InFocus “Refocusing”?

The President of the company put out a statement talking about pivoting
its strategic business model, worldwide workforce reduction and
continuing to offer support to channel customers.

All offer thoughts and opinions on this “pivot” and decision, along with discussion of the projection market.

Topic 2: What is lighting up the tech world today, including strategies that are providing a leading edge for end users?

All of the guests offer up their thoughts, along with discussing what integrator and manufacturer responsibilities should be in relation to working with the end user. There was also the “generations” conversation among all on the show, which Maura helped to make sense of (we think).

Topic 3: Alexa improving the customer experience — by violating our privacy?

On Ars Technica: Amazon admits that employees review “small sample” of Alexa audio

All enter The Firing Range to discuss how Amazon is admittedly using human transcriptions to “improve the customer experience.”

“We take the security and privacy of our customers’ personal information seriously,” an Amazon spokesman said.

With such improvements, along with statements like this, should we even be concerned about our privacy anymore since we’ve probably already passed beyond the point of inevitability?

Sit back, plug in, hire a Gen Z (apparently they’re going to save the world) and join us as we live…

Episode 118: Star Wars, the Bird Box CES 2019 Challenge and The Firing Range (it’s back…)

Join the Crew host Corey Moss, Kym Frank, Adrian Doughty, Tim Van Woeart and Maura Quinn as the welcome their guests:

Gabe Moronta – Technical AV Product Manager – PSO at Zoom Video Communications
Renee Benson – Vertical Sales – Education at NEC Display Solutions of America
Jimmy Paschke – Director of Sales at SurgeX Residential
Jonathan Webster – Recruiting Manager at TierPM

Follow us here – it’s all necessary information as a listening guide for this podcast.

Act 1: Star Wars

Right off the bat, the Crew intro says it all as you’ll hear dialogue from a scene in one of the greatest movies ever made. From there, well, get ready for a Star Wars podcast trip as the Crew and guests discuss some of the movies, ones they liked, disliked and a character that should never have entered a galaxy far, far away. One of the Crew members looked the part – we believe Tim is ready to star in Episode 9.

One of the guests did admit to never seeing any of the Star Wars movies, but he did see another one of epic proportions – and we gave him extra credits for it. Many of them.

Act 2: The Bird Box CES 2019 Challenge

Netflix has warned fans against participating in a potentially dangerous online challenge that’s inspired by its recent original horror film Bird Box.

Yet they didn’t mention anything about it to the guests on this show.

Well, the good thing is that everyone blindfolded on the podcast are inside and sitting down. The bad thing is they have no idea what’s going to happen after they remove the blindfolds.

Some of the Crew members, as well as the guests are challenged with questions about certain weird CES 2019 tech products.

Get ready to play the “CES Price is Right” where all of them try to guess the price of these items while not being able to see a thing:

The weirdest gadgets from CES 2019 – One of the stories: Las Vegas gets weird(er) – One of these items, Lovot (the cuddly robot from Japanese robotics startup Groove X), has one mission in life, and that is to make you happy.

I tried out Foldimate’s laundry-folding bot at CES 2019 – The story: Bots to fold laundry – a device that promises to fold a “full load of laundry,” has gained widespread attention at CES and online.

Kohler’s smart toilet promises a ‘fully-immersive experience’ – The story: 146-year-old plumbing company Kohler has already stolen the show with what will undoubtedly be 2019’s hottest gadget: an “intelligent toilet” with built-in surround sound speakers, ambient mood lighting, and Amazon Alexa voice controls.

Act 3: The Firing Range

Impossible Foods Rolls Out The All New Impossible Burger 2.0 At #CES2019

The tech conference seems an unlikely place to unveil a food product (as Kym alludes to) and indeed, the Impossible Foods launch of its new plant-based formula is the first food product to launch in the show’s more than 60-year history. They say it’s brown and charred, and smells like a real burger. Umm, and it bleeds? As always, there are for and against teams – and did the winning team really win? Not if they end up having to eat this thing.

Sit back, plug in, and join the Crew on this rollercoaster ride to wherever 2.0 as we live…

Paul Harris – CEO, CTO at Aurora Multimedia Corp.
Garth Leach – Director of Marketing at ZeeVee, Inc.
YT Liang – Product Manager at ATEN Technology

As was pointed out in the previous ‘Welcome to the Mind Shift’ episodes, many types of discussions occur in the audio visual industry – including in-company and client meetings, panels and networking conversations at trade shows, and social media interactions. Over the last few years the AV industry has seen changes and enhancements in technology innovation, approaches and implementation like never before, to go along with these daily discussions.

On this episode, we’ve invited four guests from well-known manufacturers to focus on AV over IP and HDBaseT discussion based on these questions (after guest introductions):

What would you say that you/your company has achieved in terms of industry AV over IP and/or HDBaseT leadership in 2018?

Compare/contrast AV over IP and HDBaseT solutions – what are applications for which one is truly better to use than the other?

The AV over IP vs. HDBaseT wars – is it time to end the madness? Or is this still a true challenge?

And finally, AV industry predictions for 2019 provided by all participants in the podcast.

Adrian Doughty – National Sales Manager at Nureva

James Fife – Consultant Extension, Global at rp Visual Solutions

So, on InfoComm exhibitor Episode 81 we had AV Life, and Bacon Life. On this episode, along with AV Life we get Bourbon Life – yet on the previous episode there was talk of bourbon too.

So, if you add 1 and 1, you’ll get 2 episodes of The AV Life that give you 3 AV favorites: bacon, bourbon — and great exhibitors.

Call it the #NewAVMath.

Listen as all of the guests on this show talk about what their companies will be doing at InfoComm 2018.

Laura kicks things off on this one, followed by Dana and Pippa and the others (after an initial check on the ‘Bourbon Room’). There are periodic checks on the Room during the show, specifically to find out exactly what two close industry friends are doing in there.

Will there be any “scoop drops” (again, the Katye McGregor Bennett kind) on this one? Maybe? OK, so we really need to develop that bacon concept from Episode 81.

At the end of the show, the guests play the “lightening round” – make sure to stick around to check it out.

There’s mention of InfoComm Karaoke, and what will Rich and Brian be singing? Right – heaven help us.

That’s all! Sit back, plug in and we’ll see you at InfoComm 2018 where you’ll be sure to get a shot of…

The AV Life.

Episode 78: Time to Power it Up on the Road to InfoComm 2018!

Join the Crew host Corey Moss, Katye McGregor Bennett and Michelle Loret as they welcome their guests;

Adrian Doughty – National Sales Manager at Nureva
Gina Sansivero – Director of Business Development, Education at FSR
Marika Aquino – Managing Partner at Tier PM

We dedicate this podcast, a show about AV, and life – along with this special episode – to the greatest people in any technology stratosphere… the #AVtweeps.

Corey talks about why this is a special episode of the show, and how Katye has been an important part of this ‘The AV Life’ podcast journey as well.  Michelle has been a very important part of the show as well since she joined at the end of January.

And Gina won a Convergent AV Radio award – announced on this show! You’ll hear all about it.

The InfoComm 2018 discussion begins with Adrian talking about Nureva and all – or should we say most – that is going on for InfoComm (and there’s more award winner talk involving our PR Ninja…). Corey also asks Adrian to talk about President and CEO Nancy Knowlton and her leadership, along with discussion of the company and their growth (Corey mentions a recent interview with Nancy on Convergent Tech Talk).  Corey talks about how Nancy is a woman in AV who all in the industry need to know.  Adrian also discusses the “collaboration discussion” in the industry along with how Nureva differentiates.

Marika talks about Tier PM, a leading recruiter in AV and IT, what they do in terms of recruiting in the industry, and what they will be doing at InfoComm. Corey asks Marika to talk about her background before she joined the AV industry, as well as how Marika has been recognized in the industry. Marika also mentions where they will be at the show.

Gina discusses her special award, and then talks about what FSR is doing for InfoComm, (as well as UBTech) – specifically furniture. There’s also discussion about Jan Sandri, President at FSR, Inc. (and another great Woman in AV) in terms of how the company has continued to grow and innovate, and Gina mentions how Jan talks about family and “staying true to their roots.”

Next, Corey talks with all about the InfoComm Reception and Networking events. Tier PM is a sponsor of the AVIXA Women’s Council Breakfast (Marika talks about it) and FSR is a sponsor of the Tech Managers Reception (Gina talks about this).

Nureva is a global partner and sponsor of the TIDE Conference and Adrian discusses this.

And then finally… FREE BEER!

There’s free beer at InfoComm! This discussion actually leads to a more interesting discussion with all on the show. Tune in for this one.

Sit back, plug in, get on the road to InfoComm ’18 with us and live…

Episode 66: Living on the Edge of AV and Exponential Experience

Join the Crew host Corey Moss, Alan Brawn, Justin Rexing and guest member Christina Engh as they welcome their guests:

Kyle Davis – Global Marketing at Harman Professional
Adrian Doughty – National Sales Manager at Nureva

While ISE 2018 is taking place at the RAI in Amsterdam (Crew members Katye McGregor Bennett, Michelle Loret and Jared Huet are there), Corey, Alan, Justin and Christina are back in the U.S. talking with their guests about some of what is taking place at the show, and much more.

Toward the beginning, you’ll hear part of an interview Michelle conducted with Shure (focused on their Microflex Complete Wireless system), and later on in the show you’ll hear Corey talk with Katye about some of what she observed at ISE, including discussion about AVIXA’s presence there.

Kyle begins the guest discussion by talking about Harman (and Samsung), products, and the excitement of where the company is going in 2018. Adrian talks about new products Nureva brought to the show including the brand new Dual HDL300.* Alan then begins with discussion about “2018 as the year for audio visual,” and Justin joins in with perspective of educating the end user.  Corey, Justin, Alan and the guests continue to extend this conversation, talking about industry companies, technologies, integration, the customer –  also talking about the experience. Christina known by many as a drones expert (who has worked with Stampede) brings perspective concerning experience as it alludes to being better educated, which led to education discussion with Alan and Justin who are educators in the industry.

All then talk about those in PR and marketing (Alan begins by talking about Katye and her role in the industry), and Kyle of course gets deep into the discussion as a global marketer in AV. Corey talks about working with global PR and marketing people in AV as well. There’s also discussion of ways of getting industry information and social media.

Excellent closing comments on this show about AV, education, information and the experience (with of course a closing note from Alan Brawn) so make sure you keep listening for those.

Sit back, plug in and experience the AV as we live…
