Episode 68: The Return from ISE 2018, the Experiences, and Stories to Tell (Part 2)

After an electric, record breaking ISE 2018 show, the Crew is back along with guests who have returned from exhibiting at the show in Amsterdam. Alan and Justin have joined Corey and Lauren who were on the Part 1 show to talk with the guests about what their companies did at ISE along with their experiences at the show.

Joan Vandermate begins by talking with the Crew about the new SmartDock Flex.

Kordon Vaughn talks about a few product and news items: Triad One Streaming Amplifier, Pakedge Wireless Router with BakPak Lite and the recent acquisition of Ihiji.

Brady Bruce talks about Jupiter PixelNet 2.0 along with the new range of laser projectors. There’s also very interesting projection and screens discussion here as well brought by Alan.

Rich Ventura begins by talking about NEC’s partnerships and relationships which is always a major discussion for him. NEC brought a range of new technologies including RB Laser to the show and Rich discusses that (along with an award given to NEC). There’s also discussion of what NEC is doing with Raspberry Pi, a must listen.

The show wraps (as in Part 1) with the guests and Crew members talking about what’s upcoming for them and their companies in terms of trade shows and events (including ‘The AV Life’ coming to the DSE).

After an electric, record breaking ISE 2018 show, the Crew is back along with guests who have returned from exhibiting at the show in Amsterdam. Katye and Michelle returned from ISE and share their experiences, Katye of course is CEO|Chief Strategist at KMB Communications, and Michelle, who represented Convergent AV as a reporter at the show, is Regional Director – Gulf Coast at ProVideo Solutions. You’ll hear them talk about the show and the city of Amsterdam – for Michelle her first ever trip to ISE. Corey was back at home base in Virginia during the show, and he talks about working with Michelle to put out the exhibitor and executive interviews that she did on Convergent AV. Lauren was home in Dallas, TX, and she looked forward to this show’s conversations with the guests as did all of the Crew.

Episode 67: The ISE 2018 Executive Interviews – Dave Labuskes, Julian Phillips, Rich Ventura and Cory Schaeffer



Crew member Michelle Loret spent the week at ISE 2018 and conducted product discussions with exhibitors – along with one-on-one interviews with certain industry executives:

Dave Labuskes, Chief Executive Officer at AVIXA – Michelle sits down with Dave Labuskes who has come to ISE for the first time with the newly rebranded industry organization, they begin by talking with about this, as well as the “user experience.”  They discuss what people will be able to look forward to attending InfoComm 2018 in Las Vegas this June – Dave talks about creation of content, as well as TIDE which will be taking place again at the show. They also talk about some exhibitor statistics, as well as how the shows are the epicenter of the industry. Dave also discusses the commitment to audio visual and bringing value over all of the verticals, as well as a focused discussion on digital signage. And of course, creating the integrated experience with audio visual technology.

Julian Phillips, Executive Vice President at Whitlock and Chairman of the Board of Directors, AVIXA – Michelle gets together with one of the AV industry’s leaders and top influencers Julian Phillips, who along with his executive role at global video collaboration company Whitlock, is the new (and first) Chairman of the Board of Directors, AVIXA. Michelle begins by asking Julian about his being at ISE, and he also details the European market in this conversation, including discussion of economies of scale. Next is a global discussion as Julian talks about the Global Presence Alliance (GPA), from its creation to bulding the global footprint along with the catalog of services, 24 x 7 multilingual service desk, manufacturing partners and the customers. He also talks about their sharing economy including development of relationships, knowledge base and new ideas. Julian then discusses his becoming the Chairman of the Board of Directors, AVIXA, and also talks about the organization, community and data analytics, including market research conducted by AVIXA. Michelle and Julian close with discussion of the industry organization’s name change along with the necessity of accessing analyst information.

Richard Ventura, Vice President of Strategy at NEC Display Solutions and Chairman of the Digital Signage Federation (DSF) – Michelle sits down with Rich Ventura an industry leader in display and digital signage solutions, who is Vice President of Strategy at NEC Display Solutions as well as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Digital Signage Federation.  Rich begins by talking about the acquisition of S[quadrat], and the Best Large Booth win at the show along with what took place in the booth. Rich also talked about some of NEC’s products showcased as well as their partnerships, and their strategy with Raspberry Pi and OPS architecture (and next SDM). Michelle then asks Rich about what to look forward to at the next shows – the Digital Signage Expo (DSE) and InfoComm, and Rich adds some discussion of the London Showcase, and also discusses the New York Showcase (now in its 25th year) in depth. He talks about a great focus on verticalization, and NEC helping integrators to put together the proper solutions. He discusses how the NEC executive teams work together at the trade shows – NEC Display Solutions of America and NEC Display Solutions Europe. He also talks about meeting with Dave Labuskes as well discussing education, analytics, AVIXA and DSF the organizations, and more. Rich closes talking about integrators going for the right opportunities.

Cory Schaeffer, Director, Systems Solutions Global Enterprise Accounts at QSC – Michelle catches up with Cory, one of the AV industry’s most prominent leaders as well as a leader of the AVIXA Women’s Council at ISE 2018 to talk about QSC the company and the culture, along with her role. Cory also talks about the large number of women at the company, and QSC “50 and Forward.” Michelle discusses the AVIXA Women’s Council and events with Cory (Michelle is a part of the Houston division, Cory heads up the Southern California division with rp Visual Solutions’ Brandy Alvarado), as well as how Cory has been a pioneer of the AVIXA Women’s efforts.

Episode 66: Living on the Edge of AV and Exponential Experience



Join the Crew host Corey Moss, Alan Brawn, Justin Rexing and guest member Christina Engh as they welcome their guests:

While ISE 2018 is taking place at the RAI in Amsterdam (Crew members Katye McGregor Bennett, Michelle Loret and Jared Huet are there), Corey, Alan, Justin and Christina are back in the U.S. talking with their guests about some of what is taking place at the show, and much more. 

Toward the beginning, you’ll hear part of an interview Michelle conducted with Shure (focused on their Microflex Complete Wireless system), and later on in the show you’ll hear Corey talk with Katye about some of what she observed at ISE, including discussion about AVIXA’s presence there. 

Kyle begins the guest discussion by talking about Harman (and Samsung), products, and the excitement of where the company is going in 2018. Adrian talks about new products Nureva brought to the show including the brand new Dual HDL300.* Alan then begins with discussion about “2018 as the year for audio visual,” and Justin joins in with perspective of educating the end user.  Corey, Justin, Alan and the guests continue to extend this conversation, talking about industry companies, technologies, integration, the customer –  also talking about the experience. Christina known by many as a drones expert (who has worked with Stampede) brings perspective concerning experience as it alludes to being better educated, which led to education discussion with Alan and Justin who are educators in the industry. 

All then talk about those in PR and marketing (Alan begins by talking about Katye and her role in the industry), and Kyle of course gets deep into the discussion as a global marketer in AV. Corey talks about working with global PR and marketing people in AV as well. There’s also discussion of ways of getting industry information and social media.

Episode 64: Getting Together to Talk on the Road to AV Utopia – ISE 2018 (Part 2)

Joe Chordas talks about ZeeVee, a manufacturer that has gained prominence in the industry in AV over IP, hiring on a new marketing executive, along with the company celebrating their 10th year bringing their AVoIP solution. Greg Mattson talks about QSC Q-SYS Core DSPs and control, the sub-segment of the company which he is responsible for, along with discussing adopting more IT standards and adapting, as is continuous conversation in the industry. David Schweer then discusses visual collaboration at Prysm, their software platform and moving away from proprietary hardware along with supporting other’s interactive display hardware. He also talks about IT being driven by end users, bring your own device and not being a “closed shop.”

Episode 64: Getting Together to Talk on the Road to AV Utopia – ISE 2018 (Part 1)

Bob Sharp talks about the Utelogy software-defined control platform, which has increased in visibility in the industry being a true software solution, this along with a conversation of playing more on “IT’s terms.” Peter Herr is next talking about the new P300 IntelliMix Audio Conferencing Processor and Microflex Advanced ceiling and table array microphones. He then talks about Axient Digital, which drew major reviews at InfoComm 2017. Rich Ventura talks about some of NEC Display’s solutions (including a discussion of Raspberry Pi which was brought to InfoComm 2017), C-Series commercial grade displays with an attractive price point, along with the RB Laser Cinema projector. The Crew also congratulate Rich on being re-elected as the Chairman of the Digital Signage Federation which he also talks about.

Michael Vanderheeren gives a small preview of the UniSee video wall product, and then talks all about ClickShare which is coming to ISE in a celebration of its 5th year on the market as a leading wireless presentation product. Michael also gives a preview of an excellent special promotion that Barco will be holding at the stand. Adrian Doughty talks about the Nureva visual collaboration solution, Span software and HDL300 audio conferencing system as the company looks to advance creative collaboration and digital transformation for the enterprise. Tim Stone talks about what Polycom is offering in terms of “human to human collaboration” and the user experience with their products and solutions, including Trio and Pano, as well as their ecosystem play.

Next the guests get a little deeper into the ISE 2018 discussion, what they will be doing there, along with excellent conversations, perspectives and insights from each of them. Of course as always there’s some of the beer talk, and this discussion about a scooter…

Episode 63: The Leadership Series (# 2): Leaders in the Digital Signage World

Alan expounds on the DSF as former chairman as well as being a long time educator, and later Rich has a special announcement where Alan’s long time involvement is concerned. Stephanie talks about the DSF and her involvement now within the organization.

Andrea then talks about the Women of Digital Signage group, Katye, Alan and Stephanie also add to the discussion. Stephanie begins discussion about what’s happening at Broadsign, talking about a focus on sales tools and additions to their tech stack for 2018. She also talks about where the AV industry is going concerning digital signage, and Lauren adds to the discussion being from the commercial AV side. Rich then talks about the DSF, the digital signage industry, NEC and also follows up on AV, digital signage and display perspective. There’s some “connected” discussion here too.

Rich starts the trade show talk with ISE 2018 and the technologies there, as well as how he’ll be getting around the show. In the midway there’s the beer talk, and we also find out who our designated podcaster is. We also talk about a hall of fame induction – you do have to hear this discussion.
