Episode 133: Do You Feel Like We Do?

Join the Crew host Corey Moss, Maura Quinn and Michelle Loret as they welcome their guests:

Joe Way – Director of Multimedia Services at California Baptist University
Kaleo Lee – Sales Manager – Southwest at BrightSign
Carrie Leigh Garcia – Sales Executive at DC Group

Never before has a The AV Life show begun with guest introductions, shout outs and banter about Bundt cake. If you’re a cake fan, you’ll like what you hear – especially from Michelle, Carrie and Kaleo.

The topics for this episode:

For the love of an industry: Talk about why you love the AV industry

NSCA Ignite’s Send us a selfie video about why you’re hooked on AV gives you the chance to tell young people why this industry is so great. On this show, the Crew and guests will talk about why they love the industry.

A multigenerational view for the positive

We’re bringing back this question from last week with new generational perspectives.

The value of trade show swag

Here all talk about swag, and just what exhibitors could hand out to win over attendees. Some have favorite swag items, and we may just be putting together a Swag Council (hint: spinners and popsockets appear to be pretty popular).

Then, as always, it’s time for…

The Firing Range!

Stress at work, we all have it. So instead of going off on co-workers or your computer, you can hit, swear at and stick pins in a black sofa pillow robot that shakes instead.

Priceless.

Engadget: These ‘cathartic’ stress robots can take a beating

The debate begins in The Firing Range with even teams (hurrah), and ends in a win with a future warning, and a sea of emotion.

Sit back, plug in, eat cake and don’t stress out while we live…

Episode 129: ReFocused, Ready, and What Did They Say?

Join the Crew host Corey Moss, Tim Van Woeart and Maura Quinn as they welcome their guests:

John Greene – Vice President of Sales and Marketing at New Era Technology
Adrian Doughty – Director, North American Sales at Nureva
Michelle Loret – Senior Account Executive at Utelogy
Kaleo Lee – Sales Manager – Southwest at BrightSign

And so it begins – the Crew and the guests, who are all in different time zones in the U.S. and Canada, start the leadoff banter. Michelle interviews Kaleo, John points out the advantages to working for a Frank, and Corey talks about one of the guests being the happiest person in the industry. Then the latest Tweetstorm (John wants in) – and it all unfolds from there.

Topic 1: InFocus ReFocused?

The Crew and guests take a deep dive into this story:

InFocus “Refocusing”?

The President of the company put out a statement talking about pivoting
its strategic business model, worldwide workforce reduction and
continuing to offer support to channel customers.

All offer thoughts and opinions on this “pivot” and decision, along with discussion of the projection market.

Topic 2: What is lighting up the tech world today, including strategies that are providing a leading edge for end users?

All of the guests offer up their thoughts, along with discussing what integrator and manufacturer responsibilities should be in relation to working with the end user. There was also the “generations” conversation among all on the show, which Maura helped to make sense of (we think).

Topic 3: Alexa improving the customer experience — by violating our privacy?

On Ars Technica: Amazon admits that employees review “small sample” of Alexa audio

All enter The Firing Range to discuss how Amazon is admittedly using human transcriptions to “improve the customer experience.”

“We take the security and privacy of our customers’ personal information seriously,” an Amazon spokesman said.

With such improvements, along with statements like this, should we even be concerned about our privacy anymore since we’ve probably already passed beyond the point of inevitability?

Sit back, plug in, hire a Gen Z (apparently they’re going to save the world) and join us as we live…

Episode 104: More Cowbell Please!

Join the Crew host Corey Moss, Kaleo Lee and new member Joe Whitaker (The Thoughtful Home) as they welcome their guests:

Kevin Barlow – Director of Business Development at Draper, Inc.

Nader Dajani – Head of Business Development at Josh.ai

Toni Sabatino – Designer Owner at Toni Sabatino Style

The show begins with Corey with talking to Joe about becoming a new Crew member, and then there’s an immediate “audio mishap” after that. Then he compares Draper’s long time standing in the industry along with Josh.ai’s relatively shorter time. Toni Sabatino, a home designer specializing in kitchen and bath is next – she’s returned for another show and talks about her continuing fascination with the industry. Joe brought Toni in, and she has continued to love it and all of the relationships she’s made.

Corey talks about having various relams of the industry on the shows, here commercial and smart home along with the home designer (on episode 100 it was commercial, residential/smart home and digital signage).

Then there’s that convergence conversation…

Nader talks about Josh.ai – luxury voice control for the most advanced homes in the world – the technology and opportunities in voice control. Then all talk about moving past the technology ‘fear factor’ for industry advancement as well.

Toni talks about interior design and lifestyle – also considering the magic of tech making it all happen in terms of the user experience.

Next is conversation with Kevin Barlow, beginning with news of the week involving Barco UniSee, and what Draper is doing these days in terms of advanced business solutions and partnering. Along with the 116 years in business, still of course manufacturing screens and shades. Corey also drops the name of a very good friend and former inside sales person at Draper who he used to work with.

There are of course more hashtags on this show – and Joe-isms. That’s a first.

The show ends with a professional life cowbell question – and then, it just ends…

(Join us for more on the next Convergent AV industry podcast – coming very soon).

Sit back, plug in, and put some more cowbell in your life as we live…

Episode 102: Bringing the Happiness – Zoomtopia 2018

Join the Crew host Corey Moss, Kaleo Lee and guest Crew (Zoom) member Gabe Moronta as they welcome their guests:

Derek Pando – International Marketing & Zoomtopia lead at Zoom Video Communications
Wayne Driggers – Channel and Strategic Alliances Leader at Zoom Video Communications
Jimmy Vauhghan – UC Technical Product Manager at Crestron
Mike Kollen – President / Chief Architect at eSyncTraining
Olya Zakharova, PhD – Director of Business Solutions at eSyncTraining

Derek joins during one of his busiest times of the year, he is the Zoomtopia Lead, and leads off the show talking about Zoomtopia, the Zoom User Conference in terms of working on the conference with the team, discussing content, the speakers and more.

Wayne, who has been with Zoom since 2015 talks about the conference, he also talks about CEO Eric Yuan, and something fun that he did at Zoomtopia last year (it had to do with coffee). Jimmy talks in depth about the Crestron and Zoom Video Communications relationship from the start – with Crestron Mercury and Zoom, shown at InfoComm 2017. Olya (who Corey has known for a while over social media) talks about Zoom Video Communications, and the passion she has for the company and the solutions.

Next – Corey, Olya, Mike and Kaleo tell their Zoom user stories.

As usual, numerous hashtags created on this show, listen in for them (Corey made Gabe responsible for posting them on Twitter). Then Jimmy takes over, and we get the hashtag #ZoomJustWorks (approved by Olya).

Attempts were also made for “news” – aka scoop drops. Katye was certainly missed.

Wayne then talks about Zoom and digital signage, and what this technology means in particular for the customers, along with Zoom enhancements and added value to the experience.

Gabe talks about what he does for the company, and focuses discussion on Zoom Rooms. Olya talks about this being her first Zoomtopia, along with Zoom, Zoom Rooms and the overall experience. Mike talks about this being his first Zoom User Conference as well, he also mentions Stephen M.R. Covey (Featured Keynote at the conference) and his book The Speed of Trust – Eric Yuan’s favorite.

Mike and Olya also talk about Serena Williams. And of course… a Jimmy Vaughan WWE story. Finally, what excites all who will be attending about the conference.

There is discussion about Eric Yuan throughout the show, his leadership, and how happiness is his mantra. Corey also talks about Zoomtopia news that was shared over the year by Zoom Video Communications through the show.

Adam Cuzzort – Chief Technology Officer, Solutions at Prysm
Wayne Driggers – Channel and Strategic Alliances Leader at Zoom Video Communications

Brad Price – Senior Product Manager at Audinate
Greg Priest – Senior Account Manager at Advanced Presentation Products / APG Displays

As noted in Part 1, on this episode, we’ve invited six guests from well-known companies to talk about the industry based on these questions:

– Hardware of course still carries importance in the industry, however do you believe that this is still mainly a hardware/box-first (or only) thinking industry while IT is primarily a software/cloud-centric industry? If so, what’s to be done in terms of encouraging a greater adoption of technology categories beyond hardware? If not, what are the indicators you see that true such adoption is taking place?

(Continued with Adrian Doughty – Brad Price and Derrick Kelly had left the podcast).

– Do you believe that DIY is a true concern business-wise for the commercial AV integrator, and possibly the manufacturer? If so, what do you think can be done? If not, please explain.

(Kaleo Lee hosts this discussion).

Episode 99: Welcome to the Mind Shift II (Part 1)

Join the Crew host Corey Moss, Kaleo Lee and guest Crew member Derrick Kelly as they welcome their guests:

Adam Cuzzort – Chief Technology Officer, Solutions at Prysm
Wayne Driggers – Channel and Strategic Alliances Leader at Zoom Video Communications
Nic Milani – Executive Director, Commercial Product Marketing at Crestron
Adrian Doughty – National Sales Manager at Nureva
Brad Price – Senior Product Manager at Audinate
Greg Priest – Senior Account Manager at Advanced Presentation Products / APG Displays

As was specified in the first ‘Mind Shift’ episode, many types of discussions occur in the audio visual industry – including in-company and client meetings, panels and networking conversations at trade shows, and social media interactions. Over the last few years the AV industry has seen changes and enhancements in technology innovation, approaches and implementation like never before, to go along with these daily discussions.

On this episode, we’ve invited six guests from well-known companies to talk about the industry based on these questions:

– What do you believe to be the most necessary technology focus (or focuses) to move the industry forward? What do you believe there should be less focus on (if that’s necessary)?

– Hardware of course still carries importance in the industry, however do you believe that this is still mainly a hardware/box-first (or only) thinking industry while IT is primarily a software/cloud-centric industry? If so, what’s to be done in terms of encouraging a greater adoption of technology categories beyond hardware? If not, what are the indicators you see that true such adoption is taking place?

There were very interesting non-technology answers given to the second question as well.

Sit back, plug in, and listen to Welcome to the Mind Shift II (Part 1).
