Episode 149 (Part 1): All About Tech and the e, as in eSports

On this extended length The AV Life podcast, we begin with the first e – eSports. So to start, we’re Kym and Maura-less. After some of the usual Crew banter – like Tim and Spence where have you been? (Spence talks about some of the DSF activities, Tim talks about attending the AV/IT Summit) – introducing the guests of course, and one of them just happens to be stationed in a Starbucks.

Discussed on this podcast part one, eSports is a huge topic in the AV industry, especially over the last year. Meg begins this conversation talking about working with an Overwatch League ambassador, and talks about the tech involved as well. Corey talks about the fact that eSports is considered a sport, as well as the real opportunity now for the AV industry. Tyler talks about ESPN hosting eSports competitions, and how the sport is packing arenas. He talks about the sport’s profile, and the upcoming Olympics in 2024. Are eSports players athletes? All talk about that too. There’s monetization and culture discussion as well.

Tim talks about colleges and universities and how students will be looking for those institutions which are outfitted for eSports. Tim also talks about this at Rutgers. Ryan, who is not in the AV industry and was mainly brought in for the second part of the podcast, talks about a new eSports arena being built in Philadelphia – he also talks about Blizzard (video game publisher) Overwatch (game), Dota2 (the most played game on Steam), and eSports athlete Tyler “Ninja” Blevins. He talks about Fortnite’s gaming model which has changed the face of gaming and eSports He also has a concern about those who are gamers and “practicing.”

Again more talk about the AV industry and the expansive, exponential growth, bringing major opportunities for work, which Corey refers to as a “trickle down” effect. Meg talks about a hotel in Vegas which put in an eSports arena. She talks about the immersive experience, and how it will affect graphics and streaming as well. Ryan asks Meg about eSports having a big impact for the push to technology innovation for better audio and video. Tim talks about gaming stations, and the quality of video and audio output and Corey gets in the discussion here too. Tyler adds about opportunities for PC companies that have lost market share here (Dell for one) to manufacture higher end PC’s, screens and more. Corey talks about the integrators’ opportunities for global integrations. He also talks about his experience at E3 in the 90’s.

We do get serious here for a bit, as this has been high level discussion in AV for some time now. Andrew talks about why he wrote this article, and some of his perspectives concerning the AV industry and network/cyber security.

From Andrew’s article:

Worst case scenario, front page news tomorrow is an enterprise data attack worth millions that is traced back to AV equipment. All the AV equipment you installed will be ripped out, and the prophecy from my last article about the end of AV hardware will happen in the span of a week.

This time Maura and Tim are the team leaders (Corey takes a break with Kym being off), and each choose pretty good teams to take on this subject.

Pabst Blue Ribbon, the 174 year old beer known and loved by so many, is now side by side with a coffee/YooHoo-like hard drink made by Pabst Brewing. So what’s the problem? Yes, we hear your argument PBR (or maybe all beer) die-hards, and while some of us may agree, others of us are really happy with this.

Or we’re pretending to be. This is a debate segment.

Who wins? Kym’s not here (she ended it big-time for the win last time), but we had yet another big-timer on this one – listen in to find out just how exciting (and happy) an end it was.

At the point where all began the segment “InfoComm 2020 The Purge” – the background message from Tim was “What’s The Buzz.” Who isn’t tired of all of those buzzwords and terms you hear on the show floor – and we’re here to discuss that. One of the guests goes one step beyond to talk about that great Orlando heat and humidity – though no one really ever has an issue with that, right?

Kym adds to the segment, unbeknownst to the guests (along with the other Crew members), asking what ferocious animal would be released on InfoComm as a part of The Purge. Some fun answers from the guests – Maura also has one to add, and Tim just goes with another green screen background image.

Kym then asks a question to the guests about their favorite thing that happened at any trade show or event they were a part of.

Yet, of course this is the debate portion of the podcast, and for and against teams must be chosen. Kym and Corey choose, and while you may think you know who the winning team will be (does Maura play the emotion card again here?), stay tuned till the end when it’s slam dunked by one team leader, and the other has no choice but to concede at the true point of no return.

InfoComm 2019 has officially ended (two weeks ago), and boy are we still tired. But, troopers as we and all are in the AV industry, the Crew gets together with exhibitor executives for a great IC19 post-show. It begins with Corey talking about suggestions of a virtual way for those who can’t attend the show to look in on social media, and Kym suggests he tape a smartphone to his hat as he goes around the show. We’re currently in development – patent pending.

Corey then begins talking about what an outstanding show InfoComm 2019 was, and introduces the guests. It was Maura’s very first InfoComm, including the AVIXA Women’s Council Breakfast and they talk about that – and she described the show, the energy, the experience and more. As for her vendor booth experiences – kind of like this…

The guests begin talking about what took place at the show for them, along with partnerships, and the Crew members interact in discussion – Corey being a part of the tech/videoconferencing/UC space, Tim as the higher ed tech manager, Kym as a company President, tech/data expert and social media influencer, and Maura as a well-known young AV and social media influencer. Then Maura brings up a great point about brainscans and potential issues. Who’s really the doctor here?? And then Michelle “redlists” herself. Check this out.

Futurism – US Gov Now Collecting Social Media Handles of Visa Applicants

In the Firing Range – before they can enter the United States, visa applicants will now need to let the government know what they’ve been up to on social media. That’s OK, because the industry trade association is watching us every time we put out a social media post – yet, they still let us come to InfoComm.

Who wins and who loses here? Let’s just say two people who have never been on the same side before run the risk of losing for the first time. If that makes any sense.

Just remember, and never forget – once you enter the Road House, you can never leave. Just like trying to check out of the AV industry…

Episode 140: Get to Know More About Collaboration, Technology, and the Higher Ed Classroom with X2O Media

Rob Brinklow – Sales Manager at X2O Media

Tim, Senior Project Supervisor at Rutgers University, joins Corey in this informative discussion about X2O Media and collaboration on the higher education level.

Mansour begins talking about the history of X2O Media – from broadcast beginnings, to focus on working with retail and enterprise markets. He talks about what STRATACACHE has meant for the company, along with Rob’s role. Rob talks about engaging with digital technology and collaborating, Mansour follows up that discussion as well. Tim adds to the discussion in terms of technology and collaboration on Rutgers’ campus.

Mansour talks about a new generation of workers and having a communications scheme – for X2O Media, unified visual communications which he explains. Rob talks about distance learning and similar experiences, adding engagement and motivation to the conversation for either employees or students. Mansour picks up on this too.

Mansour details a project with Harvard University from about 5 years ago, talking about building a virtual classroom, keeping interaction with student and teacher fully natural. It had a large video wall, each student had their own camera, and it employed directional audio. He also details the high cost for the room, and how today those costs have lowered significantly through software and cloud technology. Attendees at InfoComm can see this type of collaboration atmosphere in action, being in the room and remote.

Tim talks with Mansour about the technology as it involves the higher education collaboration classroom, himself being responsible for many rooms across the Rutgers campus.

Corey talks about higher ed, as he worked with colleges and universities in commercial integration sales, and points to similarities that corporate enterprise has to higher education. Rob follows this up with the collaboration piece, and how it has similarities and resonates as well. They also touch on telepresence systems, and how over the years installations have become significantly less, with users achieving even more today through current offerings, as X2O Media provides.

Conversation turns to data visualization and aggregation, as well as engagement as Mansour and Rob discuss this, and Tim also brings perspective from the large university campus side.

Both talk about enterprise and education parallels, and Mansour talks about how major corporations have education campuses as well where X2O Media becomes a larger conversation. “Green” is also brought up in this conversation by Mansour.

Social media becomes the final discussion here in terms of how X2O Media handles this in terms of collaboration and communications strategy, along with engagement. Tim also discusses this from the university side.

Episode 130 (Pt 1): The Creative, The Smart, and the Mic Drop

Bringing creativity to the forefront. Not all of us have creativity in our job descriptions but we all work in an industry of the arts. What are some ways you work creatively or creative strategies you use at work that differ from the way your job is typically structured?

All answer talking about forms of creative in their daily lives, also discussing social media as a creative part. Wait till you hear about one of the things that Cory does (Corey talks about writing a profile article about her a few years back including this). One question – is Michelle’s brand of creativity widely acceptable? Then there’s the proper way to cut a bagel, workout routines, improv and the new “AV”. Yep, you have to hear this one.

What smart technology has your place of work implemented in the office (if any)? What smart technology have you implemented in your home or day to day life (wherever that may occur/if any)? Has it been an improvement or is it a nice to have?

Ah, for the love of Alexa. Cory starts out talking about Alexa and the meaning of life. Of course Danielle is here to talk about Alexa, control and the smart home – she talks about the benefits, as well as how you can have some fun with a smart home with unsuspecting guests. And there just may be something happening in the near future where Danielle (or a voice that sounds just like her) will be helping you out with all of your Alexa issues. Tim talks about getting his first “hit” of IoT devices.

Michelle talks about the “Siri Conspiracy” – something to do with voice command and the Bayou. Then she brings up stories of caller ID to go with this discussion of voice bias. Danielle helps to set the record straight with some serious (authorized) plugs of Control 4. Jen talks about her like of smart technology, yet she doesn’t get it (Danielle to the rescue here too!). Then there’s that Apple Watch, and her dislike for Siri. So, she’ll be hosting a show soon too. Erick got totally frustrated installing his smart home system, bringing up the new “AV”, and Danielle develops a brand new creative idea for this (bingo!).

The President of the company put out a statement talking about pivoting
its strategic business model, worldwide workforce reduction and
continuing to offer support to channel customers.

All offer thoughts and opinions on this “pivot” and decision, along with discussion of the projection market.

Topic 2: What is lighting up the tech world today, including strategies that are providing a leading edge for end users?

All of the guests offer up their thoughts, along with discussing what integrator and manufacturer responsibilities should be in relation to working with the end user. There was also the “generations” conversation among all on the show, which Maura helped to make sense of (we think).

Topic 3: Alexa improving the customer experience — by violating our privacy?

On Ars Technica: Amazon admits that employees review “small sample” of Alexa audio

All enter The Firing Range to discuss how Amazon is admittedly using human transcriptions to “improve the customer experience.”

“We take the security and privacy of our customers’ personal information seriously,” an Amazon spokesman said.

With such improvements, along with statements like this, should we even be concerned about our privacy anymore since we’ve probably already passed beyond the point of inevitability?
